downtown St. Paul. School District 199 services most of Inver Grove Heights.

Since 1854 schools have been part of the community of Inver Grove Heights. Up
until the 1950s a system of small, community school districts serviced various
neighborhoods in the area. These districts were neighborhood run and consisted
mostly of one-room school houses. The post World War II era brought growth that
these districts found difficulty in handling. In the 1950s many of the smaller
districts consolidated and erected modern school buildings. By the late fifties
the community was in need of a secondary school since the South St. Paul School
District would not accommodate the growing numbers of Inver Grove high school
aged children. Primarily because of that need, all Inver Grove area school
districts eventually consolidated to form Inver Grove School District 199.
During the early years of consolidation, I.T. Simley, retired Superintendent
of Schools in South St. Paul, advised the new district. In 1960 Simley High
School opened its doors to students. Opening of new elementary school buildings
soon followed. A new Simley High School was built in 1971 adjacent to the older
which now serves as a middle school.

1998 new additions to the high school, including classrooms, a new media

District 199 encourages the
maximum use of its buildings by making them available to members of the
community. The facilities are available at any time which does not
interfere with educational programs. Fees are minimal. All facility
requests should be received at least two weeks prior to desired date of
